Colon and Rectal Cancer Screening
Screening for colon and rectal cancer is recommended for all adults age 50 and older. For individuals with risk factors, including a family history of colorectal cancer, screenings at a younger age are recommended. Screening procedures may include a colonoscopy, fecal occult blood test, digital rectal exam and barium enema.

Screening procedures still being evaluated include a virtual colonoscopy and stool DNA testing. Your physician or gastroenterologist may recommend one or more of these procedures for your screening. A colonoscopy is considered the procedure of choice for screening because it allows the gastroenterologist to visually inspect your colon and rectum for polyps or cancer and permits for biopsy or complete removal of these growths at the time of the examination. The physicians affiliated with The Ambulatory Center for Endoscopy and Colonoscopy (ACE) perform thousands of colonoscopy screenings each year. It is recommended that an average risk individual should have a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at the age of 50.
