Esophageal Cancer Screening
At this point, there have not been standards or routines established for esophageal cancer screening. Clinical trials to study the effectiveness of screening are underway around the country. Multiple tests or procedures are being studied, including upper GI endoscopy, biopsy of cells lining the esophagus, brush cytology in which cells are brushed from the lining and examined, balloon cytology and other procedures, which examine the lining of the esophagus. Endoscopy procedures to examine the upper GI tract are currently ordered when patients meet certain criteria, and when your physician or gastroenterologist considers it to be the best procedure to evaluate your medical condition.
