Esophageal Manometry/Motility

What is esophageal manometry/motility?
The muscles in your esophagus perform a vitally important function in swallowing food and liquids and passing them through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) into your stomach. Abnormalities or disorders in swallowing can lead to a variety of medical conditions. Esophageal manometry is a test or procedure performed by a gastroenterologist to measure the function of your esophagus. This is done by inserting a tube into the esophagus to measure the pressure and patterns of contraction waves during your swallowing.

Why is this procedure performed?
You may be referred for esophageal manometry to diagnose swallowing disorders. This testing is designed to assess the motility or function of the contracting and relaxing of your esophagus, especially the lower portion and lower esophageal sphincter. Abnormal results can indicate disorders such as achalasia and diffuse esophageal spasms.
